Maintenance of fiberon® decking

Cleaning is up to you

Composite decking materials are pretty resilient. If it is your desire that your composite deck maintain that 'just installed' look then you will want to establish a periodic cleaning cycle of 1x or 2x per year, depending on your environment and lifestyle. On the other hand, if you decide not to maintain your deck then it will get dirty over time. One of the great things about composites is that they are pretty forgiving. If you skip a few years and then want to revive the deck, it is simple. If you use the right products the results are generally excellent

'Mind the Gap'

If the gap between your decking boards is less than 5mm, it will catch organic debris. This process evolves into gaps that are fully clogged. This is undesirable and will result in water puddles and a build up of organic material on your deck. This organic debris is a strong food source for mold and mildew. It is composed of dropped food, leaf litter, seeds, fertilizer over spray and pollen. Keeping the gap clean is the easiest way to keep your deck clean. So, if your gapping becomes clogged, use a garden hose, a spatula, putty knife or similar tool to remove the debris and help the deck maintain itself.

The good news is that tannin stains, if exposed to the sun and water, resolve themselves over time. Depending on the season this can take several weeks to several months. Once tannin stains disappear after the weathering process is complete, they do not reappear.

Oil and Grease

Stains Given the purposes and common uses of decks, grease stains are unavoidable. In all cases, avoiding exposure is best, for example, do not fill up tiki torches with citronella oil on your deck surface and use a grill mat under your grill. Speedy clean up is best, the longer the oil or grease sits on the surface the more likely it is to soak into the wood fibers. Over time, almost all oil and grease stains disappear. The amount of time depends on the type of stain, the exposure to water and sun, the type of wood in the composite decking and other factors.

Ice and Snow

If you reside in a cold weather climate where ice and snow periodically come in contact with your deck, use calcium chloride or rock salt to melt the ice and snow.

Scratches

fiberon® Professional : Micro-Dome™ is an exclusive surface tread pattern that improves traction and reduces the effects of surface scratches. Micro-Dome™ surface is embellished with tiny grooves that channel away water from under your feet. The peaks of these grooves are rounded at the top - not pointy like other deck boards - so they are not as susceptible to breaking off during heavy wear.

fiberon® Tropics™: Surface scratches and abrasions will fade after weathering. Once fiberon® Tropics have fully weathered, it is more resistant to visible scratching. When exposed to the sun heat, the damaged area will be less visible.
